Support the Friends of SSJE Annual Fund

Polly ChatfieldThe Brothers have responded to a call to devote their lives completely to living out the love of Jesus as expressed in the fourth Gospel. Everyone who decides to make a gift to the Brothers is also responding to a call to love. You get to hear Jesus’ voice for just a minute saying “I have called you friends,” and even to be a friend of a friend of Jesus is a wonderful thing. That’s what we are when we support the Brothers.

Co-Chair The Annual Fund,

The Three Great Gifts

Levels of Giving

The Brothers welcome and appreciate all gifts of any amount. If you are able, please prayfully consider an annual commitment of $500, under $10 a week, or more. Gifts can be made annually, monthly by credit card or direct debit, by stock gift.
SSJE will acknowledge all donors by name, but not amount in our Annual Fund report.

Currently the Brothers are supported by donors giving at the levels of:

  • Annual gifts up to $500
  • Annual gifts of $500 - $999
  • Annual gifts of $1,000 - $2,499
  • Annual gifts of $2,500 – $4,999
  • Annual gifts of $5,000 and above

Be a Friend: Make an Annual Gift

The Brothers receive no regular institutional support. The gifts of Friends quite literally perpetuate their life and love. In this, the Brothers are upheld in their ministry by the generosity of those who have experienced their love and care. They are upheld by our prayers and our love, but they count on our generosity. Our generosity is like another hand, another pair of hands, given to them to do their work.

Please enter the stream of love that flows from Christ and out through the hands of the Brothers, by joining the Friends of SSJE and making a gift.

Vow Support: Make a Three-Year Pledge

The reasons to make a three-year pledge to SSJE begin with the simplest and most practical: a three-year pledge helps the Brothers not have to worry about calling, writing, doing all the institutional stuff that they otherwise need to do to survive. But, even more, a long-term gift like a three-year pledge strengthens and affirms your loving connection to their work. Such a gift is like a vow or promise, it’s something they can count on, for strength.

A long-term gift returns its own gift to you as well. As human beings we all long for some kind of constant community, a partner or a spouse or a dear friend. The community associated with the Brothers meets this longing and satisfies our desire to reach up towards the light and towards something larger. The constancy of our love returns to us in the constancy of love we receive from the Brothers and the community they gather around them.

Name the Love: Remember SSJE in your Will

All gifts, because they come out of love, never simply stop. By giving to the Brothers now, in any gift, your love is reaching the kind of people that you would not have a chance to reach out to yourself. When you make a gift, you enter a stream of love that takes you beyond today, beyond tomorrow.

A bequest lasts even longer, because it is not just a now gift, it is a forever gift. After you leave this world, a bequest can continue radiating love, leaving a mark of love on your life. If you want to leave a mark of love behind, there is no institution that we know of that radiates love the way the Brothers do.

The Fiscal Facts

The Brothers of SSJE depend on friends and benefactors for the financial support of their life and ministry.

In round numbers the Society of Saint John the Evangelist has a two million dollar budget that covers running two large properties which serve as retreat centers (the Monastery in Cambridge and Emery House in West Newbury, MA), looking after 17-21 monks and staff, and funding all SSJE ministries. The brothers have an endowment whose draw is limited to the prudent level of 4.5%-5%, which funds about 35% of the annual budget. Guesthouse income contributes about 15% of the budget, and 5% comes from other sources. This means that the Community relies on Friends who donate to the Annual Fund to fund 45% of the budget. Friends’ gifts make it possible for the Brothers to welcome all.
