“Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up.” Words that I have needed to hear all my life, and still need to be reminded of. Brother Paul’s personal testimony about what it’s like to be very old brought much hope and consolation to me as I prepare to face the same challenges. What would my “quality of life” be in a nursing home? For me, quality of life is the moment-to-moment awareness of God. I am reminded of Jesus’ last conversation with Peter at the end of John’s Gospel. When I was young, I went wherever I chose to go; when I am old, others will convey me where I have no wish to go. Even there, Jesus says, “Follow me!”
