“Brother, Give Us a Word” draws wisdom from the origins of the monastic tradition, all the way back in the fourth century. Historians tell us that when the earliest monastics withdrew into the desert, they began to attract others who sought to deepen their spiritual lives. A person would seek out the desert monastics and then ask them to share some wisdom: “Abba, say a word…” “Amma, speak a word...” The “word” from the wise did not necessarily answer that person’s question, but instead it offered an instigation to lead them further into their own discovery.
For ten years now, we Brothers have been humbled and honored to offer our “words” with readers around the world.
We invited friends around to world to share how Brother, Give Us A Word has been meaningful to them. How have the daily words inspired you or influenced your prayer life? See what other have said and share your own story in the Comments below.
We hope that the daily words encourage readers along their own path to deeper relationship with God.
Br. Jim Woodrum has created a book that collects words from across the church year, from all the members of our community. Alongside the daily words, it also uses a second medium to invite you into prayer: photography. For each word, a photograph has been selected to illuminate the quote.
